There are studies that prove the correlation between music and increased intelligence. It's not listening to music alone, but the actual process of learning music--it develops the cognitive processes in individuals and stimulates thought patterns in such a way that it the knowledge crosses subject boundaries.
This is not true for everyone. Just because I study music doesn't mean I'm smart---I'm horrible with math and science!
Listening to classical music can stimulate brain function. Many of the articles I list below discuss this process in detail.
Also conceive what you deem intelligence to be...there are different levels of intelligence and different ways of measuring.

Definitely NOT true. I think coolkitten is right. If you're aware of the music of Mozart, even if you've only sat through a showing of "Amadeus" and liked the music, you're probably smarter than most ALREADY! So you'd naturally do better on a test. For that particular person, listening to classical before the test would put them in a more relaxed, joyous state of mind, which could allow their neurons to fire more freely during their testing, resulting in higher percentage of correct answers (or lucky guesses).

I really don't know if it makes you smarter. But I've made the experience of listening to classical music since my childhood because of my father who was listening exclusively to classical music. Therefore I got a foundation I wouldn't like to miss because it's sometimes helpful for the understanding of other genres of music.

I don't know about evidence but I don't think it's true. It's not scientific and has no scientific back up. If you nkow about Mozart and if you know about music you're probably smarter than the average person. I really don't think its true though.

I find it interesting that this phenomenon is called the "mozart effect." As someone who has loved classical music as I do, "Will it make you smarter?" No. no. sorry, but....... no. It's more beautiful than that.

I've heard there is equal evidence for and against it, so I would just assume that it doesn't coz it clearly doesn't always work, so it's not reliable.

Listen to Mozart to remind you to think, and John Lee Hooker to remind you to feel.
