I've got a lot of stuff (bad) going on in my life, (new daily persistant headaches), ive had a headache for like 13 months now, everything seems to be going downhill. I've spent the last 20 minutes answering people's questions on yahoo answers, some important ones like why some girl should not end her life early. Do you believe in karma? to me it sounds mildly ridiculous but do you think i'll get a break once in a while if i help others? Wether or not i do get a break, atleast i'll be doing some good right?

I think there is some lack of clarity in understanding Karma.
One should not confuse Karma with some astrology or such predictions. In simple words , one should look at karma as a sort of Gene mapping. You are born with that mapping. Period.

On a more practical level we can equate our fate with , say, a scrable game. You are dealt or you randomly choose 7 letter tiles . You play with what you have been dealt and not brood over the fate that you have been dealt badly. No use. You simply play by the rules.

People who are not able to stand upto the demands made on them by life simply want an escape route and blame it on karma and run away from life. But one can also try to meet the challenges and succeed. The skeptics will say even that is karma. !
If you feel you are going down hill you can think and find out for yourself what are causing such feelings. It may be that you are expecting others to come to your rescue all the time and that you donot want to change yourself. May be your self esteem is very low. May be you have chronic fatigue that makes you feel dull and down. Try to trace the reason and stand upto it.

If you've had a headache that long, please go get it checked out. All the karma in the world is not going to heal a medical problem that is being ignored.

But as to the karma part of the question. Good on ya for trying to be helpful to others. If everyone did the same, karma would naturally be realized simply because we'd be living in a more caring, nurturing society. Everyone would be helping one another.

But even if that doesn't occur, you must be getting something from helping others. A feeling of being useful, the satisfaction from an occasional 'thank you' or just the challenge of solving problems.

So, while I am skeptical of karma itself, the wisdom behind karma is something I believe is very true.

Peace

Karma is simply a law of cause and effect. In the law of Karma our thoughts and feelings influence what we do. Our deeds and actions have consequences and the results influences our minds. However, it doesn't work as simply as, "I do something good now and something good will return" or "I do something bad and something bad will happen." What you do and how you behave does have an impact on you and on others but it is not always easy to predict the consequences. If you live a good or right life you will generate good Karma that will be part of your legacy and from which you may have peace of mind. The opposite is also true if you intentionally cause harm. Others can tell you much more about this and there are many books particularly in Buddhist and Hindu teachings but the concept is also consistent with Christianity and with basic psychology. However, you can be assured that if you endeavor to do what is right you will dramatically increase your potential for happiness. As to your headaches, it is important that you seek medical advice and possible treatment for it. Don't look for any supernatural cure for a physiological condition. It may or may not be serious but you should rule out a medical condition. In the meantime living a life that is in the service of others can only help.

Karma is nothing more than the silly realization that there are consequences in life for our actions. Rob a bank you go to jail, hit your neighbour on the nose get arrested or beat up etc. God made each life sacred and for a purpose and his forgiveness is available through Jesus but that doesn't mean there won't be consequences. Now as to whether we should be helping others... of course. Jesus called each of us to help the sick, the poor, the widows etc. Will you get a break... maybe, maybe not, but you atleast will have made anothers life better and maybe a friend that can help you too.

I believe in karma. There's a theory about karmic choices. Life is learning process. Whenever we face choices in our lives, there are two ways to go; one is karmically right, the other the wrong choice. Our hearts are intelligent, and the choice that feels right in our hearts is the one to choose. Helping others, is always good. However, if spending time responding to others' desperate life situations leaves you feeling more desperate yourself, perhaps you might try having some fun and going to categories that are about your own interests, such as music or movies, books, hobbies, etc. In this way, you'll be giving and receiving information more familiar to you, in effect, letting go of your own troubles for a while and enjoying being in the present moment. Also, about the headaches, I'd would suggest seeing your doctor, if you haven't already done so. If you already have, and got no relief, Id suggest getting a second opinion. Hope any of this info is helpful to you and best of luck. Take Care.

Yeah...you'll get a break for helping others.

However, a 13-month long headache is not so much a problem with karma as it is a medical emergency. Go see a doctor! Immediately!! (How's that for good karma?)

I think its crap to be honest with you. Rather than hope for a miracle, I would visit a doctor or take some medications like aspirin......be active in fixing this....

This is what could happen though. Lets say you continue to help others and your headache disappears for a totally unknown and "normal" reason. However, I think you would risk yourself by telling yourself that it was karma that healed it, when really it would've went away regardless of how "good" you behaved.

Heres what I would do though, visit the doc, take some meds, and continue to help other people out(not because of karma but it can help you feel better psychologically and will improve your mood and how you feel as a result).

karma - whether you believe it or not is of no consequence - it exist anyway like gravity - it is often misunderstood as 'fate' - over which we have no control - karma is the law of cause and effect - an action produces a reaction - it can be good or bad - instant or delayed - the trouble is, it is not always immediately obvious ie if you do someone a good turn and they return the favour and you are aware of it - you recognise the event -but often someone will help us without our knowledge - so we don't always recognise its workings. ' Bad' karma is the same [though strictly speaking karma is just karma] if you harm somebody and they bide their time to harm you, you don't always put two and two together. but if you go back over events you can often see 'how one darn thing leads to another'! if its good you then can repeat it - if its bad you can stop doing it - you then have more control. if you do good and nobody knows - you will always build merit - sooner or later it will come good - you'll see .....

No i do not believe in karma. Not everything happens for a reason, some things just happen. Good and bad things happen to everyone, whether it is a good person or a bad one.
