In phsyics ,dimensions are the directions of movement. 1d is just a straigt line, imagine just forward and backword. The 2nd diemension is left and right movement relative to the 1d's movement of foward and backward. So 1d and 2d make up a surface...like a table top. 3d is up and down movement. Combination is our every day movement which we call 3d. Notice that no combination of 1d with itself could equal a 3rd dimensional movement. This is whats called linear independence and in mathematics it shows that there can be infinite dimensions. But in physics we are only aware of 3.

Dimensions Are Basically Direction, 1D Means For Example, Moving ONLY Left Or Right, No Up, Down, Forwards And Backwards Exist In 1 Dimension.
1D ___
2D Means 2 Directions, Such As Left, Right, Forwards And Backwards, And Any Combination, But Not Up And Down.
2D +
3D Is Anything Around You, Like Your Monitor, From Bottom Left Corner To Top Left Corner In One Dimension, Bottom Left Corner To Bottom Right Corner In Another Dimension, And Front To Back Is The Third.

Well, Brian gets your top answer, i think, but he's wrong on his last point. In physics, we're aware of ten dimensions.
youtube "the universe in 10 dimensions" if you want more on that

1-d has coordinates and length but no width or height. similar to a line in space.
2-d has coordinates, length and width but no height. similar to a rectangle or triangle. another fact is that you can compute for the area of the object.
3-d has coordinates, length, width and height. similar to a cube or pyramid. another fact is that you can compute for the surface area and volume of the object.

There is no 1d. 2d is height and width and 3d is height, width and depth.
