ok i got a new computer for Christmas and i have another computer in my house that has a router. i want internet on my new computer but i dont want to disconnect the router for my old computer.

Its a dell? If that helps

Well, the good news is that a router does just what you want, it allows many computers to connect to ONE internet connection. You should be able to just connect your new computer to one of the empty LAN sockets with a cable and start surfing. It really is almost that automatic. As long as you haven't changed the default settings with Windows (DHCP) will get an address from the router and you will be connected.

A router will have more than one port so you do not have to disconnect the other one. Are you sure you have a router and not just a cable modem?

there should be 4 ports on the back of the router run a cable from one of them to the new pc if it is a router and not just a modem
