I was working at an Applebees and it was Valentines Day and a lady came in and sat by herself. Well, she ended up sitting in my section, so for most of her meal, I sat with her and just talked about life and it seemed to me that she left a little bit happier. It makes me sad to see that? Am I the only one?

Thank you everyone. I understand that there are some people who want to be alone at times, but I can usually tell by the first minute of talking to them. If you're like me and don't have much money, being kind to people can be the best present you can give. =)

Well, If I were a Cuban princess from Miami and I were eating alone and you came along ... all my sadness would go away in an instant!!!! I would probably totally forget that I was sad to begin with!
And then we'd live happily ever after! =D

You are not the only one. It seems this woman either couldn't see her family, had no family, or didn't want to see her family. All of these are really sad, and when I see people who are alone, I feel guilty for some reason...like it's my fault that these people are alone. What you did was very respectable and kind, and it put a smile on my face to read this. By simply talking to someone that was more than likely lonely, you probably made their day. People should try to be more like you. Maybe the world would be a little kinder. Thank you for sharing, and know that you are not the only one.

Yyou find other people that also have NO ONE!!! You could visit a nursing home and see many people that have been "put on a shelf" and forgotten!!! You DO something nice for some one else...and then you won't have time to feel sorry for your self!!! You could volunteer to help out at a local mission that feeds the hungry...you can go to the children's ward of any hospital and read or visit with some of the children that will be staying there through the holidays!!! In other words... find the true meaning of Christmas...it is about giving (of yourself!) and your time... ...it is about love. joy, sharing and caring!!! It WILL get better...just don't sit around and let "inertia" set in...That is where the loneliness starts! You may find that even though you are ALONE...you are not "lonely" there is a difference! THIS COULD BE YOUR MIRACLE!!!! Don't let your "ex" see you grovel, or appear desperate!!! Who knows...he may find this NEW you...(one with strength, compassion for others and self love) attractive and irresistible!!! And then..who knows what the new year will hold for you!!! Get excited about doing something good...you just MIGHT meet "Mr. Right" doing a good deed too! Good luck!!!

Your question is STARRED! I know what you mean. I volunteered for the homeless shelter and that's a sad , yet common scenario. It can be heart wrenching for some people during the holidays. I am glad you talked to the person and made a difference. That's what important.

No I don't feel sad because they eat alone.
I found it rather odd that all through the year - the rest of society don't feel sad about this but somehow... on one day - people are EXPECTED to be eating with someone else they are to be pitied.
I am not saying that I don't feel for these people. But I am NOT going to feel sad because they eat alone at Christmas. What if the person live alone? That is normal to them.
(eagerly awaiting for thumbs down flooding in. well... you DID ask for an opinion so do not expect evryone to always agree with you. Thnaks for asking)

No, it does not make me too sad, because I am usually one of those people and I love being on my own. I love eating by myself, too. But, I know what you are saying and that was really kind of you to keep her company, there should be more people like you in the world. =)

No. Those people could be happy as larks. I spend A LOT of time alone, and I'm fine with it. The person who is alone on a holiday might be the happiest person on Earth.

Hey, I'm alone and loving it. This is so much nicer than the B.S. I went through when I was married. In fact, I just talked to my daughter, and she told me about the usual Christmas BS with her moms family for today, and that reinforced my feelings.

No. I ate alone at a local Mom & Pop restaurant today. I was not the only one. That was nice of you. I do like my privacy, I'm a bit of a loner.
