The fictional character himself, according to the author, is gay, and I think that the controversy over the topic is because to most people in our society today 'gay' is not okay. Kinda childish but w/e. I suppose some of the parents are concerned about how they're to explain to their children what gay means. I don't get their concern because the truth is obviously what you need to tell them...

The character is gay. There was controversy because a lot of people felt that it was not necessary for a childrens character to be so (you have to remember that there are already people in an uproar over the books as they are). Most fans don't care. I don't.

They mean the fictional character. I don't know know why people make a big deal about it, probably to just give the book some publicity.

Because so many people are so obtuse that if they hear someone is gay and work in a school then they assume they're having sex with children.
That and it's a childrens book which makes them even more crazy.
