Pianos have been around quite a while, I don't know about painos.

The first piano was called a "piano e forte" because it could play both piano (soft) and forte (loud) on one keyboard unlike the organ and harpsichords which preceded it.... The creator was Cristofori (sp??) Over the years the name has gradually been shortened to "piano."
