I hope your doctor didn't leave it at that! The simplest explanation would be to say that cytomegalovirus, CMV for short, can cause disease in several different forms. For instance it can cause skin hemorrhages at birth, liver or spleen problems, bone marrow abnormalities, plus several more serious problems not initially appreciated. Most infants born with CMV are normal.

If you have given us the full scoop, your doctor owes you a better explanation. If he or she cannot give it, ask for a referral to someone - a neonatologist, perhaps, or an infectious disease specialist - who can.
