Can anyone tell me about the copyright laws concerning recording a remake of a song with the same music but with different lyrics? I once heard a remake of the song "Walk Like An Egyptian" by The Bangles on Christian radio station KLOVE but it had different lyrics and was entitled "Walk Like A Christian." What I'm wanting to know is what channels and protocol do I need to go through to record a remake of a previously recorded song with the same music but with different lyrics.....what I need to do, how to go about doing it, and what forms and papers I need to fill out, because I would like to record a remake of a secular song with Christian lyrics without getting into any trouble.....thanks!

If you don't intend to sell it or make profit off your remake then there are no legal stuff to be worked out. If so try googling it ... I just did and found a bunch of stuff on the legal rights.

Using NEW lyrics is not a problem. However just changing a word or 2 to make the old version politically correct would be an infringement. If the changes are for satirical affect, that is generally allowed, but then the copyright remains with the original lyricist.

Using the instrumental music is called a "cover". You are allowed to do that without permission because the copyright stays with the original composer. you would need to pay royalty on any recordings you distribute, this is called "mechanical" rights. You can pay these through either Harry Fox Agency for most composers or directly to the copyright office for any composer. The rate is set by the copyright office.

in case you intend to submit i think of you may desire to get permission at using the songs while you're reprinting lyrics. I truthfully have examine memories that try this and there is often a disclaimer with reference to the lyrics being "reprinted by applying permission" or some thing to that result. Even those web content that reveal music lyrics desire permission to print them on the region for public use.
