The boy isn't tell Mommy Dearest the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. If he's on military orders to go home, the military pays the bill. If, on the other hand, he's stopping in route to goof off in lets say, Germany, the he would be picking up the rest of the tab unless he wants to wait around for a Space-A seat.

deployment time frames range from 6-18 months or so. if his deployment is longer than the 13 months some people get to leave for like 2 weeks and then have to go back. if this is the case, then yes he has to pay. why would the military or government pay for that???

You aren't getting the whole story. The military will fly you to your home of record where ever that may be. From there you are on your own.

i work for the va. this is b.s. unless he is going somewhere with his own agenda not the governments, and even then he could probably get transportation. lets say he wanted to go to see ayers rock in australia first, he MIGHT have to pay then, but i think he might work out something through dod (dept of defense) instead

Does he travel first, business or economy class?
I recommend travelling with Afghan Air, I hear they do unbeatable specials for Americans. Excellent in flight service and a free stop over in Kabul!

I doubt there is any truth to that. Unless he will have purchase a plane ticket form his base in the US to wherever yu guys are from, that's plausible.

If for some reason he did have to pay, he will file a travel voucher and get it back as long as he is on orders.

Lots of these technicalities occur. They get straightened out. I guarantee you that if he talks to his CO, then he won't. SNAFUs like that happen all the time, but they get cleared up.
