This goes against the order of operations. Aren't you supposed to multiply 6 by 3 first?

Orders of Operation:

P = Parenthesis
E = Exponent
MD = Multiplication/Division. Left to Right
AS = Addition/Subtraction. Left to Right

You would have to divide it first, then multiply.

12/3 = 4
4 x 6 = 24
24 - 4 = 20

No, multiplying and dividing are basically the same thing, seeing as dividing is simply multiplying by the reciprial. Therefore:

12 / 3 * 6 - 4 = 20
4 * 6 - 4 = 20
24 - 4 = 20
20 = 20

No, your supposed to divide 12/3 first
have you heard of P.E.M.D.A.S??
its an acronym (please excuxe my dear aunt sally)
it stands for Parenthases. Exponent. Multiply. Divide. Add. Subtract.

this is the order of operations. but when a division problem comes before a multiplication problem , then you do the division problem first. if the multiplication comes before the division than you do the multiplication first.

same goes with adding and subtracting. which ever comes first in the problem, then you solve it.

therefore

12/3*6+(-4)
4*6+(-4)
24+(-4)
20

p.s. the paranthasis around the -4 is to separate the addition sign and the negative sign
you dont have to do anything with the -4 b/c there is no problem WITHIN the parenthasis.

The equation 12/3 * 6 + (- 4) has 3 elements namely:
12/3 which is equivalent to 4, then 6, and then - 4.

Therefore the equation is: 4 * 6 - 4 and has 2 elements namely:
4 * 6 which is equal to 24 and - 4

Therefore the equation is: 24 - 4 which is equal to 20

To sum up:
= (12/3 * 6) + (- 4)
= (4 * 6) - 4
= 24 - 4
= 20

(12 / 3) = 4
4 * 6 = 24
24 + (-4) = 20

When operations are written out like this you use order of operations a long with typical reading from left to right. Here's how to think about order of operations:
1. simplify everything in parenthesis (the thing in parenthesis may require simplification using the order of operations)
2. evaluate everything raised to an exponent
3. Multiply and divide terms in order from left to right (this doesn't mean do all multiplication first and then all division)
4. Add and subtract things from left to right

You do the math in sequential order. Now if there were a paranthesis around the 3 and 6 say like this: 12/(3*6) + (-4) = then yes you would do that portion first in which this case the answer would be 12/18 + (-4) = -4.66666. Makes no sense to do it that way!!!

No
division and multiplication has the same right of way. Here divsion is before multiplication, so

12 / 3 * 6 + (-4)
=
(12 / 3) * 6 + (-4)

Becuase when you do pemdas if you have two operations that are beside eachother that are opposites,you go in order,You don't jump around.

12/3*6+(-4)
4*6=24-(-4)=20

No 'cause you've to multyply the nominator first instead of the denominator..or just simplifly the fraction...12/3=4 and then multyply by 6 and substract 4 and you get 20...

This is why I suggest you use ( ) to avoid errors.
The first number is (12/3) or 4. The rest should be easy.
