The ducts are under the floor. The attic is clear with insulation. The furnace is in a small room with the water heater, but I have to take down a wall because it the water heater is in the way of the heater. I would like to add new ducting to each of the 3 bedrooms, the living room, the kitchen/dining room and the bathroom.

You have many options such as an insulated duct system in the attic with whatever type of furnace you choose. For a look at all your options check out my source.

You could look into the Coleman down draft system. And place new ducting next to the old.

gas forced hot air with a/c installed in the attic, or even a heat pump system in the attic with all new ductwork
