Maximum PC the Gaming Magazine, hastes Vista, as it's too slow, so they use XP for gaming and Vista for other surff. They probably have some of their machines dual booting for each system. :)

If you're looking at a gaming OS, use Windows XP. Unless you get Windows Vista 64 bit, and are spending over $2000 on this PC, you'll just hurt your performance with Vista. Even then, DX10 has some pretty intense requirements. You're really best off sticking to XP for now, unless money is no object.

Then, Windows Ultimate 64 bit, custom trimmed on services, with DX10. You'll get the top end gaming you want, but you will pay for it.

Stick with WinXP unless you have the cash to give away for Vista and all the required hardware to make it go as fast as an XP machine with much less hardware... Vista is a hardware hog and DX10 is not worth the loss on all other games available that benefit of XP's gaming specific infrastructure.
