The month-long celebration was an expansion of ***** History Week, which was established in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, director of what was then known as the Association for the Study of ***** Life and History. Woodson selected the week in February that embraced the birthdays of both Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

If Carter Woodson wasn't already dead, I say someone should kick his butt for picking the shortest month in the year. But hey, February also has leap year....and none of the other months do! Hmmm, I want to know why Black History Month gets an extra day every four years while Hispanic Month never does....and none of the other months do either! This is the kind of reverse discrimination I just can't stand!!!!

why is it given a month of study at all? When is Italian American history month? or American Indian, or German American, or Irish, Russian.... You see where I'm going here? It's silly that we wonder why there is still so much prejudice in the world when we ourselves keep singling individual races out. It should all just be American history, period. AND plenty of it! All nationalities have a big part in making this wonderful country, for all its short comings, what it is. Merry Christmas!

Black History month was the first month designated that way. They had 12 months to choose from. They chose the short one. Talk to the ones who pushed it through Congress.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Dutch aren't given a month? Settled the New Amsterdam area before the English stole it from them and called it by the fairy name "new York"...Imagine a city named after a friffen PUDDING....

In my opinion, if congress was not going to give a history month to each race, none should exist at all. Be happy for what you have.

If you are trying to look for meaning there (or more specifically if you are trying to look for racism there) then you are really trying too hard. If you look for something to complain about you can almost always find it.
