So my boyfriend got me a 20 gallon fish tank. Now my problem is that the filter makes too much noise. I don't know what is wrong with it but I know that it isn't supposed to make that much noise. The filter is a "Pengiun Power Filter 150 & 200". How do I fix the noise!! Please and Thank you.

the noise sounds like its coming from the motor thing. lol. the thing "Nemo" puts a pebble in.
I added water earlier and nothing. I took it out and tried to see if something was loose and the noise calmed but its still going. I ran out of ideas.

Unplug the filter, and take out the impeller (thing that looks like a propeller) and make sure all the plastic on the propeller wheel is intact. Sometimes, it has a spur or is cracked at the base, and it "slips" when the magnet beneath it turns. The plastic should be one entire piece (some have slits near the base) and should sit flush against the top of the magnet - http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/prod/213867/product.web Also, be sure both rubber pieces are on the ends.

If it seems to be okay, take it to a sink and flush the hole the impeller sits in with water. There may be a small piece of gravel or something caught in it that's grinding against the plastic and the magnet.

If neither of these, helps, you might want to take it back to the store. Someone there should either be able to help you fix the problem, or exchange your filter for one that works.

well, it may be a few things. I dont know about the noise level of this particular brand, but if I were you, id clean the impeller, and top off the tank (add more water, this is different from a water change)
