Before Satelite T.V. and Cable, the only television was broadcasted over the air. The antenna T.V. had commercials for a while, it helped the stations make money. Obvious. Well, when cable was starting out, around the early eighties or late seventies, I wouldn;t know for sure, or care to know for that matter, one of the perks of cable T.V. was that it was commercial free. You paid money to the T.V. company, and in return they did not have to sell time for commercials. Well, cable caught on to commercials quickly and all T.V. was commercialized.
You can, however, purchace large satelite dishes that have servos and get direct feeds from the individual satelites. It's free, but in the past few years, as the satelites are upgraded, the signals have been encrypted, and the channels are dwindling. Some of the direct feeds are commercial free, but instead of commercials, there are blank periods. I believe they are sold to local stations for over-air broadcast.

Impossible. If a TV station never had any commercials then how do you think they would stay in business?

In the UK we have four - all BBC (imaginately named BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and - wait for it, you won't believe this - BBC Four! No expense spared in that strategy boutique, eh?).

I believe in the USA there is HBO which also does the same thing.

The BBC. Also Sky News on Astra 19.2E doesn't have adverts either although it does on Freeview and Astra 28.2E.
