There are many different halo phenomena but the commonest is the 22° halo which is a ring around the sun or the moon. This is caused by the refraction of light through ice crystals in cirrostratus cloud. The ice crustals have faces at 60° to each other, the commonest shape of ice crystals. Outside polar regions, the presence of a halo is diagnostic of cirrostratus cloud.

There is a good explanation of all the different halo and other atmospheric phenomena together with some wonderful pictures on this site:

Caused by high-altitude ice crystals in our atmosphere. Each crystal acts like a tiny prism that focuses the moonlight. Usually the ring around the moon (or sun) indicates that a change in the weather is coming, usually rain or snow.
