rent, utilities, phone, furniture, curtains or blinds, sheets, pillowcases, pillows, towels, appliances, pots and pans and other kitchen stuff, food, soap, vacuum cleaner or broom, mop, cleaning supplies.... that's just a start, and don't forget that a new tube of toothpaste doesn't just grow in the drawer.
Pay close attention for a couple weeks to everything you use at home, and realize that won't just appear if you're in your own place, you'll have to buy it.

Well first of all Congratulations for finding your own space! This is definitely a big move in life and a very important one so I wish you the best....It greatly depends on if you are moving into a house or an apartment. Generally everywhere you go you'll need money for the lease/rent/mortgage, furniture, utilities being turned on...this is just some of the fundamental start-up cost. Best wishes! Because Indianapolis is a mid-western city but not on the lake (Lake Erie, Huron, Michigan) but is still in a colder region the price of heating oil maybe higher during the winter...

1 . Security deposit usually 2x the amount of your first months rent.
2. Phone installation fee, extra charges on phone hookup, but you can stretch that out for a year. Fee \ 12 months.
3. Shower curtains,drapes,blinds,bathroom necessities,towels,pots,pans,kitchen utensils,including forks,knives,etc.bedroom sheets,blankets,comforters.
4. Cable installation fee,or satellite initial fee installation.
All these fees are nominal assuming you already have furniture, kitchen table, chairs, sofa, chair, throw rugs, and a bed..the most important thing I think . You must have a good bed before anything else.
Assuming you are moving into a place with a refrigerator, you will need food also.
Also you will need a washer and a dryer,or extra $$ for the Laundromat, and $$ for soap for laundry..VERY IMPORTANT
Initially ,moving into a new apartment you will need at least $2500 ..and that does not include furniture, washer, dryer, stove, microwave,(some of these things might be included in your apartment).
Once you are past this hump of securing your own place, things will get easier.
Good Luck !

A large additional expense is the deposit money required to move in. Some landlords require first, last, and security deposits. That can be a big chunk of change.
Another surprise expense could be insurance. Renter's insurance can be a good thing to have, especially if you have anything of substantial value like electronic equipment.
