Time keeps pointing out that their person of the year is not supposed to be a hero but rather the person who was most influential. Yeah, right! Mr. Putin is helping arm Iran so they can blow us to smithereens! Getting Time's award probably gave him a laugh, knowing that he's aiding and abetting terrorists.
My choice: General David Petraes. He's turned things around in Iraq and finally America is winning over the terrorists and insurgents. If Iraqis will step up to the plate and unite to become a democracy, things will continue to get better and we'll be able to withdraw from the battlefield and start bringing our soldiers home.
Putin! POO POO !

Time's argument is that the January cover belongs to the movers and shakers of this world, regardless of that individual's moral or ethical standards. However, it cannot be denied that as Time is a world-famous magazine, it's designation does have influence on the young. And in a world so sorely lacking in role models and heroes, wouldn't it be a more responsible stance to choose someone or group who can truly inspire us. Surely, Time is not so myopic that they can't see beyond the G-8. Among the 6 billion inhabitants on this planet, surely there are inspiring figures that can do our spirit good. The monks in Burma who braved tanks for freedom immediately come to mind. Struggling NGO workers saving forests, one tree at a time, or young researchers devising non-polluting cars in a cold garage somewhere, or perhaps even one of our animal friends, such as Knut, who has done more to make humankind aware of the fragility of the earth and the plight of it's voiceless residents than Gore and all his cronies.
At least once a year, I'd like to see someone, an ordinary person, celebrated for his/her attempt, however small to make the world just a little more beautiful than when he/she arrived. It will certainly make waking up on New Year's Day less depressing, even with a hangover.

Personally, I don't like him much for several reasons. Nevertheless, I must admit that I liked the well written article on Time, and I understand the explanation and reasoning behind the choice. He's a powerful man who brought a significant amount of stability. No doubt there.
