To add RAM to a laptop you sure need to be technically inclined. Instead, to make your system run faster you will need to follow these steps:
1) Check your PC on viruses. If you don't have any anti-virus installed, think of Kaspersky. It is one of the best anti-virus programs out there, but it is pretty expensive too. Among free ones consider Clamwin or CureIt. Virus check is better done in safe mode (restart computer, click F8 before the Windows logo load screen appears and choose Safe Mode).
2) Check for Spyware. Here again Spyware Doctor is one of the best commercial products. Among good free ones are: Ad-Aware Personal Edition and Comodo BOClean Anti-Malware.
3) Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Add or Remove Programs and uninstall anything that you do not use. For this purpose I would also recommend Your Uninstaller 2006 - the best uninstalling program, to my mind. First it uses the program's own uninstallation file, then it scans the registry for the "leftovers", and after that is scans the folder where the deleted program was installed. So you can be sure that nothing will remain to slow down your system, fragment your hard drive or occupy space.
The program is not free, but ones I tried it, can't do without it anymore.
4) Download a free program Autoruns and check what you have loading with your system. And disable (or remove) anything you don't need. If you don't know what this or that process is, go to www.sysinfo.org and look it up there.
5) Lastly, defragment your hard drive. You can either use Window's own defragmentation tool (My Computer-->right click on a drive you need to defragment-->Properties-->Tools-->Defragment Now button)
But this tool is far from perfect. One of the best programs here is definitely Diskeeper. Not only does it do the job greatly, but it has a monitoring feature that works as a service in the background and enchances overall system performance. It's not free, but is definitely worth the investment.

There are several things you can do to speed up your computer without spending a dime.
1. Decrease the number of startup programs. Startup programs are programs which load immediately after you logged in to Windows. Many of these programs don't need to be loaded at startup. By decreasing the number of startup programs, you save more RAM and CPU power. To see and edit your startup programs, go to Start Menu > Run > type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) > [Enter] > click on the Startup tab > uncheck any programs you don't want to load at startup > [Apply] > [O.K.] > Reboot.
2. Clean your hardware by removing useless files and then defrag your hard drive. Use Disk Cleanup to remove the files, go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup > wait while Disk Cleanup scans your hard drive for useless files > check the files you want to remove > [O.K.]. Defrag your hard drive after using Disk Cleanup, go to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defrag > [Defrag].
3. Decrease the amount of eye candy on your computer. Believe it or not but all those fancy animations, fading and other special effects take up alot of RAM and CPU power. Do not use a background. Instead, just have a solid color background.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

1. Remove all unnecessary programs from startup.
2. Defrag the disk.
3. If possible get more RAM.
The first 2 in themselves are very effective. There are more maintenance steps but the gains are less noticeable.

Do a disc defrag. Go to a site called tuneuputilities.com and download their trial product, it's excellent. Consider getting a good registry cleaner such as regcure. I found some good info at my source.
