A lot of people who have Cherokee ancestry like to say that they're Cherokee because they think it's cool to be native. The truth is, they don't have to deal with the real struggles that real native people face everyday because they are not native, they generally are not enrolled or affiliated with any tribe. They are white twinkie wannabe's. If a white person wants to tell me that they are part-Cherokee, or of Cherokee descent, then that's fine. But an unenrolled white person who says the words "I am Cherokee" to me usually gets all up under my skin. What white people don't seem to understand is that we don't LIKE them syaing that they're Cherokee when they're not. We think they are stealing our culture, what is rightfully ours. We are happy that they are interested in their ancestors, and we will help them learn however we can...but they are not Cherokee.

Because our government allows native Americans minority status and all the benefits that come from that.
We don't have many Cherokee down here, but numerous other tribes, all trying to get recognized.
In some respects, it links people to a recognized heritage.
In too many cases, it's a link to government assistance.
Sorry, I am not trying to be rude or insensitive. I just feel that whatever we call ourselves we are all brothers and trying to separate ourselves into different cultural groups merely divides more than what we already are.

I never heard ANYONE say that. I heard white people saying they are black but not Cherokee... Maybe they really are part Cherokee. I have no problem with that.

I've actually never, ever met a white person who said they were Cherokee when they actually weren't. And if they are at least partly decended from the Cherokee tribe, I've got no problem with them calling themselves that.

A lot of white people don't say that and if they do they better have the proof of ancestry. Unfortunately, if you have a speck of Native American blood you can claim it. But being "white" has nothing to do with it, there are light skinned N.A.'s.
