Besides asking your friends for recommendations, how do you find books you'll like? Is there any web site that will tell you "if you liked this book you're sure to like this other one" the way Netflix does for movies? (Amazon.com does this to a certain extent but I find the web site incredibly annoying to navigate.)

P.S. I tend to like nonfiction.

Libraries often carry monthly newsletters that review books that have just come out, I've found a few good ones that way.

Sticking with certain authors you like works too.

If you're into science fiction there's a magazine called Locus that reviews all the new SF/Fantasy books each month.

Have you tried googling 'new book reviews' online?

Your Sunday newspaper with the movie section in should also have book reviews in the back of it.

Hi im 15 and i love finding new books. I dont always read them right away (sometimes i wait a year) but i do enjoy lookin in book stores.

The way i find new books are i go to the teen section and i sit on the floor right by the book shelf. Then i just look. Im a very organized and visual person so i only tent to like the books with good covers or titles. So im sitting on the floor just looking and soon a book pops out at me. I look at it for a while then if I like it i usually buy it.!

But i hope i helped! And I hope you find some good books out there because i know you will!

I tend to just go to the bookstore or library and browse. Titles just jump out at me. I read the first sentence in a book and I can pretty much tell if I'll like it or not from that alone.

Also, there is a website called librarything.com (I think). I believe you can look through books that way. Or, if you have a specific topic, try googling it. Like "Books on Medieval Period" or "Books on cats". You get the idea.

Well, I sort of had the same dilemma as so many novels today are made in mass production (only that which sells is written- even if its cheap goth nonsense) So today I got this really handy guide, its called -1001 books you must read before you die by Peter Ackroyd-
My first book I purchased from the reference was Rashomon by Akutagawa Ryunosuke and it was fantastic!
Needless to say, I'm going to be busy for a while.

Usually I will just go and scan the shelves. When a title pops out at me I will take it and read the back and if it sounds good I'll either buy it or borrow it. A lot of times I'll just go to Borders and sit for awhile reading. If I like the book I read I'll borrow/buy a book by the same author.

second hand bookstore clerks are a good source.

i think a list of nominees and award-winners of any reputable award-giving body on literature will be a good source as well.

i am also a fan os SF. for good SF novels a list of Hugo and Nebula awardees is a good starting point.

If you go to www.barnesandnoble.com you can see all the categories, and the website tells you which sort of books you'd like, if you viewed a such and such book.
Also, at the end of some books, you get suggestions for other similar ones.
