I will be receiving my bachelors degree next year and I would like to know if is better to get a job in the government as a staff accountant or go work for a public accounting firm? what are the pros and cons. thank you

If you work for a public firm, you'll probably make more money--especially if you work at the "big four" (PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.) You'll also be able to transfer between companies pretty easily. But the hours will probably be bad.
Government: Interesting, but less money.

There is more stability in the government, of course, and the hours are usually better. On the other hand, with a big CPA firm, the advantages are much higher pay and the likelihood that if you eventually decide to leave, the job will garner more respect on the outside.

You should go to work for one of the big 4.

You'll get paid more and have better exit opps for b-school, change in career, or different accounting job.
