If you put wire in water for a long period of time, will it rust at all?

No, copper or aluminum will not rust. A steel wire will. They may oxidize,but will not rust.

It's always seemed to me to be a very fine line between oxidation and rust. Iron and steel rust, copper and brass oxidize. They both deteriorate in time due either to water and air or caustic chemicals, lime, calcium, in the water. It's pretty much all the same function to arrive at similar ends.

Unless it's treated in some way, all wire will corrode in water over time.

Copper will not rust it may oxidize.If that was the case we would not use it most plumbing applications.

if it is steel wire, yes. salt will speed it up.copper is not as strong but lasts longest in water.
