Are many of your friends not the people you work with day after day ?

Law - especially criminal litigation - is a fairly small profession.

Contrary to what you see in some shows like Law & Order, there's seldom much real animosity between DA's and defense lawyers except in unusual situations (usually when one side or the other has acted unethically)

In general, lawyers really do believe in the principle of the adversarial system, and see the opposing counsel as a necessary part of the system.

To the other poster.... friendship between DA's and defense lawyers usually has NOTHING to do with the large number of plea bargains. The reason is that the overwhelming majority of defendants are not only guilty, but have no defense at all.

It's not unusual for a suspect to be caught "red-handed" coming out of a store at 2am with the stolen property in his possession, admit to the cops that he broke in, give them permission to search his car, where they find drugs - and then get mad with his lawyer because he can't "get him off".

The fact is that in many cases, getting a plea bargain of "low end of the scale" sentencing in exchange for the State not having to foot the expense of a trial really IS the best the defendant can hope for.

I don't think it's like TV. But lawyers that work different side of cases are sometimes friends.

I worked for a plaintiff's lawyer and he grew sick and died. I went to his memorial service and numerous defense lawyers were there and few gave speeches recalling their admiration for the way he beat them in court.

Good lawyers are professionals and professionals treat each other in a civil manner and sometimes become friends even though they work for opposing interests.

Law is a contentious profession and a lawyer who takes everything personally will go crazy.

A good lawyer fights for his or her client, but realizes the opposing counsel is just doing the same thing for their client.

why do you think the world is all screwed up.those idiots are the ones making up the laws that make no sense.and yes in small town America that;s just what happens.that;s why the plea bargain is so widely used so much.the lawyers get together and plan what they are going to do for each other.the hell with the people that they are suppose to represent.basically lawyers are lazy laid back kind of people.once in awhile you might find one that will do a great job for you.but then you have to be well off for that to happen.like in the O.J Simpson case.it;s about the money not justice.look at all the television judges now a days.the criminal justice system in this country is a joke anymore.
