I'm curious about copywrites. lets say i wanted to submit a book or short story, or even artwork to a competition or a publisher for consideration
would it be smart to copywrite anything i send them first? like couldnt they just jack all my work if i didnt have it copywrited. couldnt some employee theif who works there do it?
im just curious if they can be trusted to take care of all that for you, or is it better not to trust them and do it yourself before you submit anything to anyone.

i appreciate everyone's help

Accoring to the Berne convention, a copyright exists the moment a work is created. You do not need to do anything to copyright a work. Don't confuse getting a copyright with registering a copyright.

Reputable publishers will not steal an author's work, they have too much to lose and not much to gain. Investigate any publishers before sending them material.

Since you are interested in the literary business, I suggest you take a look at Ms Snark's blog:

She isn't adding anything to it these days, but it is a priceless resource.

First, learn how to spell copyright. I am sure that you are a smart fellow, but bad smelling ranks right up with bad breathe.
It generally takes a patent lawyer to file a decent copyright. If you want to do it yourself, the fees start at $35. The paperwork must be perfect and meet all of the technical specifications including spelling and grammar.
But, it is not always necessary to file a copyright. Get a copy of your document notarized and you are the owner. The problem is that you have to be aware that someone stole your work to know that you can take action against them.
