Well who knows, I thought they had some kinda worm or something to that effect and that is why they got the name cured ham afterwards and were cured with smoke thus called smoked hams using hickory, or some other woods and then flavoring was added later such as sugar, maple syrup, honey, etc....

It just needed to lose weight, so it had to go under the knife, or maybe it was trying to cry under water? Who really knows these things?! Try asking a pig, all they do is go "Oink" and grunt alot! Another of Life's Little Mysteries, solved with a knife, I suppose.
