It all depends on how many AP classes are offered. If your school offers 20 or so, then for a good school like CM you should be taking 2-3 Junior year, and 3-5 senior year. If your school only offeres 3-4 APs, then you're obviously not expected to take as many. At many highly selective schools, the GPA is somewhat secondary to how many AP's you've taken. Getting A's is still important, but CM will deny someone with great SATs, all A's who has taken zero of 20 APs offered.

Usually if you're applying to a good school like Carnegie Mellon, they like you to have 2+ (3+ really) AP classes. If you score a 4 or 5 on the exam you can earn credit.

I'd say your possibilities don't seem to be well due to the fact your SAT ratings are lovely low for Carnegie Mellon. Plus laptop technological know-how is without doubt one of the scorching majors there, so entering that predominant might be problematic. My son implemented to the laptop technological know-how application at Carnegie Mellon -- three.four GPA with practically all honors guides, SAT I ratings within the seven hundred's, SAT II ratings within the prime six hundred's to mid-seven hundred's, 7 AP guides with 4s or 5s at the tests, management in his extracurriculars. He used to be now not admitted. It's a hard institution and a hard application to get into.

No school requires ANY AP classes for admission. The only restriction is that most schools want you to take a rigorous program in high school, and at many schools, the AP classes are the only classes which go beyond the normal high school program. If you have an Honors or IB program, you can do that instead with no trouble.

AP classes have nothing to do with getting into a college young grasshopper. Sure, they give you a higher GPA, but if you score extremely well on the ACT, SAT, and SAT2 you will most-likely be able to get into any college that you can afford to attend. Please realize that you should have decent GPA along with the test scores.
