what is a jane/john doe?

as a csi fan, i hear it a lot..but..i'm obviously not so huge a fan to know what they mean when they refer to a john or jane doe?

When csi use the term John/Jane doe, it mean a person that they don't know the identity of. Forensics my say it is a female, between 25 to 30, and if their are any medical descriptions or art on the body, but other then that they don't know who it is.

A Jane Doe is a woman with an unknown identity... and a John Doe is a man with an unknown identity...
Grissom uses those terms when a dead body arrives and he has no idea of the name of that person

Jane or John doe is a name given to unidentified people at a crime scene. When the investigators don't know the victims name they call them jane or john doe. Its like a generic name.
