I think it depends whether it was just in "training" or an actual run. . Was it Amtrak? Burlington Northern? Union Pacific? I think some of them are more proned to railroading than others. They might have some sort of tracking device to determine the motive of the locomotive's locomotion to see if there lay any 'ties'.
