The cause is from persons like fluke and lance and spidergirl who spread false rumors that the Mayans said the world would end when in fact they NEVER said such things. It is the people of TODAY in the last 5 years that have made such statements. Fluke's slamming of the Mayan people is uncalled for. It results from being totally ignorant about a topic that you try to appear to others to know something about.

The cause of it is from persons trying to make some money off of a gullable and low educated public who do not understand the Mayan calendar and are too lazy to research it on their own. If you have a book to sell or a website to cash in on by getting sponsors and advertising, this is your best chance.

The cause is from hoaxers and fiction writers who have a sadistic sense of humor by creating false doomsday scenarios and sitting back to see how many people will actually believe in it.

The cause comes from Nibiru fanatics who refuse to accept that the Sumerians were writing about Jupiter. Any year that they can think of is another hope that their magical planet will appear.

The cause is from persons who will do anything to resurrect the bodies of Nostradamus and Cayce from their graves any time they can add another date and misinterpretations to the overgeneralized ramblings of these two (or the Bible) and sell a quick show to A&E or the History channel or the Discovery channel.

It all comes down to $$$.

Other than that, no, there is no bases and no scientific evidence to lend any credence whatsoever that the world will end.

no, the world will not end in 2012
(It already ended on December 31, 1999, when all our computers blew up and we all died -- remember Y2k?)

On Dec. 21, 2012 will be the end of a Long Count (a.k.a. "age") in the Mayan calendar. There are 5 ages so the next one will begin on Dec. 22, 2012.

Happy new Long Count.

There is some talk that this date also marks the closest angle between the position of the sun at December solstice and the direction towards the Galactic centre, but that is not in 2012 (if the Mayans were shooting for that, they missed by a few years because they made a small mistake in determining the period of precession).

Anything else is hogwash.

The world as we know it, will be here beyond 2012. To many people out there giving bad information designed to scare people.
The 2012 myth is based on an ancient Mayan calendar. The calendar itself ends on 2012, not humanity or the earth.

Not completely. we could loose 2/3 of the population. or none at all. my research has found that some drastic Earth changes are coming eventually. maybe soon. if you add up all the text and measurable astronomy, a lot of things make sense.
I suspect the Earth may want to try and shrug some of us off of it's shoulders. depends on where you are at the time I suppose.
research: Edgar Cayce, Armageddon; 2012 and beyond.

Where did you get this idea? Do you see the zoologists saying that all species are going to end, are the doctors saying that the world will be full of fatal diseases? are astronomers saying that a thousand asteroids will wipe us out of the planet? No. It is just a bunch of guys trying to scare people, without scientific base, without evidence. So, up to now there is nothing that makes me think that.

you heard about how if you get a certain mass of Uranium or Plutonium together it will go 'critical'?

well, that is going to happen in 2012, except it won't be U-235 or Pu-238 it will be TYPOS

the Earth will finally blow its top over words like "TYHE" and "WATS" and it will be ALL YOUR FAULT!

Merry Christmas

the Mayans, a civilization that died out 500 years ago and practiced human sacrifice, predicted the world would end in 2012. Are they the kind of people you tend to believe?
