Thats is how I use to do things, but from many past mistakes I have finally learned you should read the whole thing first. It saves you from starting something you can't finish without a part you didnt get or some glue or whatever. Also having things assembled in the order you need them can help.
But sometimes I still try to do it myself and the as I read it too.
But at least 50 percent of the time I mess something up doing that.

That depends on what it is. If it's something quick and somewhat simple I will read the instructions and then do whatever it says but if it's complicated and looks like it's going to take awhile I will read it step by step while I'm putting whatever together.

i prefer to look at how many parts it contains,
then i make sure all the parts are there,
in order to be able to even begin reading the instructions. Now i look at the instructions. Then i start with step 1 and complete it according to the instructions. and so forth and so on.

Well most instructions come in steps! So I follow the step by step instructions.

I read the whole thing and do it, and maybe read it on the way if I think I forgot something.

I try to read it first and then do it. If it doesn't make sense, then I read it again and put it together as I'm reading it.

I read the whole thing.
And then I do stuff step-by-step.
The last time I did stuff step-by-step, with out reading the whole thing, I screwed the whole thing up.

I ignore the instructions and try to do it myself. Then if I get stuck or break it, I turn to the instructions ;-)

I do it first, then if I can't figure it out, I start reading the directions. They are usually too long and drawn out.
