Once you have burned a recovery DVD of Vista is it necessary to keep the data on the recovery partition (D:)

Would you be able to use the recovery DVD if the data on the recovery partition was formatted?

No you don't need it, but it does not take up hat much space. What I do is I not only make a recovery set. I set the computer up the way I want it.

Delete the programs HP put on you don't like
and then load it with the programs you like.

Then image the drive. This way you can reload it back to the way you want it in less than 45 minutes. If you use the recovery disk you are in for a few hours to get where you want your PC.

I use Acronis True Image.

Normally HP not give Software to do a full install should you have problems (You can pay a little extra for a CD ). Basically they make a Partition and it like a copy of what was on your Hard Drive when you bought it. If, you have trouble then you can get it back to what it was when you bought it. Also, you can copy over time to the partition so you have software you install/download and it copy all that back. I could go into a long explain, but, this it in a "nut shell".
If, you delete the partition then you need to have an OS to install and keep the install CD's of any additional software you have or download again off the Inet.

I would keep it, cos my dvd would not play the disc once so luckily I had it on the D drive phew!

If you have room, sure. It's much more convenient and can't get lost or damaged as easily as a disk.
