We've tried chicken wire and many other various methods to no avail. Extermination is an option but chemicals are not.

after locating the entry points ,which can be actual chewed holes or may be construction gaps under the eves or dormer corners etc..I am assuming that you have tried to just seal the holes and they have chewed new ones ?? or they found other "gaps" through which to enter ( roof vents are notorious for being chewed through) . Make sure all holes are found and sealed, if they chew a new hole then you could set " live traps " to capture the offending critter , then relocate it .....however it is a much better idea to leave a single hole open , one you know they use, and put paper or tape in the hole. if the paper is moved..you know there is still animals using the hole...the idea is not to trap an animal in the house to die..smells bad etc. if your a trapper type rat traps work well on red or pine sQ,s no relocation worrys and its not easy on an animal to be relocated at this time of year

Find out where they are getting in and set a trap there. If they are red squirrels a rat trap will work. Gray squirrels are too big for that type of trap. You will need another type of trap for them. After all the squirrels are caught, close the opening so new squirrels won't move in. Squirrels like to nest where they can smell evidence of squirrels that have lived there before. When you catch them don't waste the meat. Squirrel is delicious.

Cover all the holes with something stronger than chicken wire. Mix peanut butter with rat poison and put into foil and toss onto a flat roof or somewhere where the squirrels go but out of reach of kids and pets. Put a bowl of water outside where the squalls can go when the get thirsty after the peanut butter cocktail.

Scatter moth balls through out the attic. It won't kill them but they don't like the smell and will leave. This works for mice and rats as well.
