Oh, my goodness! No! they are not unemployed. It takes them all year to check out the latest electronic toys and gizmos. In addition, they help Santa to know who's naughty or nice. They are overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated.
They need a union.

Very interesting question as I have often wondered that myself. I've sat and thought about it for hours and hours Christmas Day as I pick up and toss out all the Christmas wrappings and refuge. It bothers me so much to think about those poor little fellers without any kind of handy work to keep themselves busy for the next 364 days.

Perhaps Santa keeps them busy doing odd jobs and repairs on the toy returns at the Island of the Misfit Toys. Some of them may need some dental work . For those elves he can't use during the rest of the year becasue they have not been employed long enough for the North Pole Company , Santa gives them a good reference and ships them over seas to a remote country in China where they assemble LED lights into battery operated toys .

No !!!elfs work year round for very low wages, building toys, santa is the only one who only works one day a year. Santa also lists them all as seasonal part-time craft workers so he doesnt have to pay comp, overtime or holiday, and they dont accrue leave time (nothing to do at the north pole anyway) ..as a loosely cottage industry the workers fall in with argicultural emplyees so they dont even get minimum wage..so if you see or hear about mommy and daddy giving toys instead of santa, they are just doing their part to support the working class and break the chains of Santas evil monoploly.

We can't collect unemployment. There's no record of employment. We get paid under the table.

I don't see how that's possible; unemployment benefits only last so long. Eventually it's going to run out, and then what are they going to do?
