It depends upon what you buy. You can buy one with Windows preinstalled, but this is a little more expensive, because Windows is expensive. Depending on what you want to do with your laptop, then you could buy one with Linux installed. This will allow you to use Free office software, messenger, internet browser (Opera and Firefox are very similar to the Windows versions, perhaps a little faster and certainly a LOT more stable). Linux needs to be set up well before you buy it, but then it's very very stable. I would really recommend b uying the laptop with VISTA - which needs a graphics card to run nicely - and then download a linux version and make two partitions (512MB and another maybe 3GB) and install Linux too, then you can choose whichever you want.

If you have money, then buy a nice MacBook Pro and it will have MAC software, you can then install VISTA and choose which one you want to use. (Windows is best for games, and some software, Linux and Mac are very secure, Mac is very expensive and very good, but not better in every way to Windows).

One thing is sure, once you have your machine, learn how to do a complete backup onto a BACKUP partition. Ask someone to make it for you, and then backup every week. This way, if you ever mess up your system, you can put in a disc and restore it back to the way it was.
