My Internet Explorer has been infected with annoying pop-up ads. Specifically, pop-ups called "dcads" and "crush calculator" and "intelligent advisor".

Can someone recommend free (preferably) software that is effective against these kind of pop-up ads? I've tried several, some of which I paid for, and nothing seems to be effective.

Any other ideas?

I installed the google tool bar on my pc and it has a pop up blocker built in. I haven't had any pop ups since. If you are talking about those ads that kind of slide down from the top over a page (but if you click on a part of the site not covered by the ad it goes away), then I can't help you there because those are ads for that site's sponsors and therefore are part of that site and not considered pop ups. I still get those.

I suggest you download Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run them. If either one doesn’t seem to be able to get rid of everything it reports finding, try running it again, this time in Safe Mode. Safe Mode often prevents the malware from running and protecting itself.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode:

1. Log out and reboot your machine.
2. When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.
3. Select Safe Mode from the resulting menu.
4. The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different. You won't be able to see the Internet, for instance. Log in as Administrator. Administrator often has no password.
5. When you're finished, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Update and run them all regularly.

Good luck.

Ad-Aware by Lavasoft is an efficient (free) software that comes with a pop-up blocker. It also comes with a spyware/adware removal software that can locate the malware and permanently remove it.
Best of luck!

Download Firefox.
It's a free browser and comes with really good pop-up ad blockers.

And you can have more than one tab on one window.

First get a anti-spyware software and remove all the spyware you have on your computer that brings these popups. I have yahoo tool bar popup blocker or the google tool bar pop up blocker, and they both works well.
http://www.spywaredetector.us/
this is the best ranked anti-spyware on the market.
