No, not always, but sometimes. I'd like to think a "true friendship" would be purely based on mutual fondness, but in truth it is hard for us to turn off our self-interest radar. Often we make all kinds of inter-personal relationships based on self-interest, perhaps without even being conscious of it.

I think that i do it because of the pure heart. I turn away from no one unless i know that i can not deal with them or that things are not going to work out with our personalities. You gain friendship through a give and take. you give a conversation and take the response. i feel that some people do use friends for a cause or purpose but the world is just that way. we should all be able to benefit from having great friends but it should be a pure meaning.

Ideally true friendship is for the sake of having a great relationship with another human being..... That person may be of the same sex or the opposite sex. If a relationship is one of "I'm in this for what you can do for me!" that's not friendship. That's a "user."
A friend is one who will listen to you when things are going great in life and who is also there for you when life isn't going smoothly. You may "hang out" together at the mall, go out to lunch together once in a while, or perhaps just talk over the phone but you communicate and take an interest in the other person's life. In return you are there for the friend in good times and bad. If you are married or in a committed relationship your life partner is hopefully your very best friend although you will have other friends.
For those of us who are single and without family our friendships are all important to us. Without them we are really alone. Hang onto your true friends and ditch the users.

My dear friend, These type of items such as friendship, love, affection have their own limitations. They can never be with pure hearts always. Although If a man would try to be so, He can not. There are two powerful reasons for it. One is unavoidable selfishness. The other one is This earth is not a Heaven to be a perfect man for every man.

What is the purpose of relationship in the sensory world?
Some relationship is necessary for survival i.e. mate, family, tribe, etc. and holds a specific purpose.
All others are for some form of gratification or pleasure like 'friendship'. The goal of gaining a 'friend' is pleasure. You wish to experience some kind of 'fun' or 'happiness' and believe that something or someone 'outside' will help create that for you.
The desire for that experience is learned. The experience it self is completely imaginary as all sensory interactions must be interpreted and translated through the thinking mechanism which assigns values to each experience. A 'fun' experience in the company of another human being is desirable where as a 'sad' or 'angry' one is undesirable.
The illusion is that we are separate and must have some kind of sensory experience to create unity when in fact we are all one.

If a friend does for a cause or a purpose is an half-friend only. One who does in pure heart is an example for a true friednship. It is the difference between the both.

Friendship for a cause does not last long,it gets exposed!
One may disagree but will not undermine others worth. Honesty without hurting others is a great virtue that cements friendship.Genuineness, openness, transparency, mutuality, complementarity are the stuff with which pure heart/lasting friendship is built

Well, i'd say it depends on the situation basically...
Friendship is done with a Pure Heart defiantely... and if it is its really wonderful to be in such a relationship
But if Friendship is for a purpose, its just superficial.. that's what happens in Bollywood...

friendship is done with a pure heart..
proof: Blind men maintain a thick friendship among themselves..
They know that they r not going to get anything from the other one they are friends...
They share their hearts and forget themselves talking to each other..
They even don't know the face of the other one. But the pure heart of the other..
