I think the phrase is "cleanliness is next to godliness"
Which means keeping your self clean (and therefore healthy) is the best possible way to live your life.

The correct saying is "Cleanliness is next to Godliness" - not manliness. Someone is pulling your leg or they originally misunderstood the quote.

It was used to promote the idea that being a clean person, such as cleaning yourself, your home, etc made you closer to God.

It's Cleanliness is next to Godliness"

"CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS - "This ancient proverb is said by some to have come from ancient Hebrew writings. However, its first appearance in English - though in slightly altered form - seems to be in the writings of Francis Bacon. In his 'Advancement of Learning' (1605) he wrote: 'Cleanness of body was ever deemed to proceed from a due reverence to God.' Near two centuries later John Wesley in one of his sermons (1791) indicated that the proverb was already well known in the form we use today. Wrote Wesley: 'Slovenliness is no part of religion.'Cleanliness is indeed next to Godliness.'"

Well, the phrase you quote is an “axiom corruption” of the original Biblical phrase as many have already cited to you. The original phrase implies a "physical representation" (symbolism) of a spiritual state and relationship with God, that by sanitizing our physical impurities, then we may be in a closer Union with our Father in Heaven, Who is the “Epitome of Purity”, and is, in fact, “Purity”, Itself, for us Humans currently exist in a defiled and impure state due to our unregenerated hearts which was precipitated by the “Great Fall of (Spiritual) Man” when we defiled our original Union with God in Paradise by our willful and cognitive decision to spiritually “fornicate” with an “Other” (Lucifer), defiling our “Wedlock Union” with the “Great Eternal Husband” (Masculine Creator/Father God), for WE were the “Great Eternal Wife” (Feminine Creation); and subsequently WE became the “defiled” “Great Whore”, called in Rabbinic tradition “Lilith” (The Great Serpent’s Bride of Hell).

To form a new derivative axiom, saying “Manliness is next to Godliness” would connote a falsehood, for WE are in the “FEMININE MODE” and “FEMININE ATTRIBUTE” in our relationship with the Masculine Creator; this is inclusive of both male and female genders.

Godliness refers to spirituality. I'd ask myself:

1.- What is spirituality?
2.- What does it mean, in spirituality, to be a man?

Good luck!
