It seems the official day is the same everywhere: January 6th, the Day of the Epiphany, which is also the first day of Mardi Gras season in New Orleans, a.k.a. King Cake Day.

It would probably be "neighbor friendly" to turn the lights off sometime after New Year's and before Jan. 6.... but you might want to check with neighbors in your area to see if they decorate for Mardi Gras.... If so you're right in step for changing the lights to purple, green, and gold... If not maybe you could start a new tradition but limit the time you light the Mardi Gras lights to maybe an hour or two each night this year... and just for Fri., Sat.,Sun., Mon., and Tue. leading up to Ash Wednesday.... Next year maybe more of your neighbors would pick up the "new" tradition. How about a "finger food" Mardi Gras party for the neighbors.... ?
Whatever you decide have fun!

It seems to be the custom for people to take them down around New Years time. However, I think that if you allow people to put them up on or before Thanksgiving, seems to be the norm - 1 month or more in advance, then they should be able to keep them up for 1 month or so afterwards. So you shouldn' thave to take them down untill the end of Jan. We already start selling Christmas decorations in August/September, So I guess that's when the season starts now. I know people complain..."but i can't sleep if it's not dark", but I guess the month to a month and haolf before Christmas are Ok?
Like I said though, typically around New Years is accepted.

Any thing goes in NYC. You could keep them up all year round if you really wanted to. Heck if they can have a naked cowboy roaming the streets playing a guitar without getting arrested than you can put your lights up as long as you like. Merry Christmas by the way.

to really answer the question everything should go after the 3 kings day.

We always took them down the 1st week of January. Any Christmas lights after January 1st is white trashy.
