I've recieved a wireless laptop for Christmas and it has been set up for the internet. I already have a router for the PC and that works fine, but I can only access the internet on the laptop if I plug in the USB adaptor that we use for the PC. Do I need to do this if the laptop is wireless enabled? The shop assisstant at PC World said that I wouldn't need an adaptor because the laptop is wireless.
Help!

It was all set up by a tech guy at beginning of December and he said it was good to go. The laptop was put away until today. The router we use for the PC is Wi-Fi enabled (Belkin).

Some laptops (mainly PCs) have a Wireless SWITCH, an actual On-Off Switch somewhere on the PC that turns on the built in adapter, check around the case of the computer for an on-off switch.
The reason they do this is because often Wireless Adapters use a lot of juice, and its useful to turn them off quickly.
If you cant find it, let me know the manufact. and model and I will investigate!
Merry Christmas, enjoy your new computer!

I solved this problem downstairs, for a guy complaing with a friend at the front door of the building where I live. My building has wireless, and I brought my adaptor downstairs, with a copy of the driver software on a flashdrive.
I installed the driver onto the laptop, and used the plug in adaptor. Then I went to My computer - Device Manager, and installed a new driver for the LAPTOP wireless. After that, the laptop connected instantly.
If you're unsure, first go to DEVICE MANAGER and click + to open the NETWORK ADAPTORS
Then plug in your external Wireless, you'll be sure that this one doesn't need updating. Then click Properties on the other one, DRIVER, and you can click UPDATE DRIVER
Then just wait for half an hour, cos Windows is so slow to update =)) but it should work out fine. Don't waste time talking to men in PC World, they are only clever enough to sell cheap biro's.

He was right, however, if you don't have a Wireless Router then you can only connect via an Ethernet Cable to your laptop.
You don't need a USB adapter for the Laptop.
USB Adapters are poor at best.
You should be connected from your
ISP's Modem to an Multiport Wireless Routers WAN port
This will enable you to connect your PC direct to the LAN port with an Ethernet Cable and wireless with your new laptop.
Many users are unaware that you need a wireless router to connect. They think because they have a wireless laptop they can connect to there home Internet connection, and they can if they have a wireless router instead of just a plain ethernet router. It has to be Wireless.
