what's the best way to transport a laptop? Hibernate? Standby?

the only difference between the two is that standby will drain battery power. Which of course would be a consideration when travelling.

all in all hibernate, proper shutdown, standby in that order when travelling if you are concerned with battery life.

Shutdown. Only to save battery life. Hibernate and standby are safe enough to use when transporting it just runs your battery down. Also carry in a carry case. Accidents do happen.

Actually it should be shut down, from the start menu, so the read/write heads on the hard drive are parked. The disk platters in the hard drive are very sensitive and with the bumping around of transport it is possible and in many cases even likely that if the heads are not parked they could contact the disk surface causing damage and data loss. Remember, the read/write heads do not normally contact the surface of the disk but rather float just a few thousandths of an inch above it. Physical contact of the heads to the disk patters can be devastating.

Yes, but when in sleep mode the ram is still being used and some heat is till being generated.I would not suggest doing this if you are carrying it in a bag. I would rather suggest hibernate, which basically shuts down the computer but saves everything on the ram to the hard drives before shut down so it can resume where it left off.

It's a good idea to shut them clear OFF, this resets the computers CPU and it is a good idea with a laptop not so much a desktop.
