My father is a rich merchant, and he wanted me to join him in business. I wanted to write poetry and to become a great poet. It angered him so, that he sent me away, to stay with an uncle, Sir Hildebrand Osbaldistone, in Northumberland.
What should I do now? How can I patch things with my father, but without going into his business?

Become the Poet Laureate and then mail him a book of your poems and in the dedication say "I TOLD YOU SO".

just get a job. learn to take care of yourself and manage your own money. honor doesn't mean obey. you might want to think about teaching english lit, leaving your summers free to write which youll have to do anyway to keep your post. lot of colleges want their teachers published so it will be good practice.

PS he might have been concerned you were throwing your life away because you probably haven't made a living as a poet yet? you could have done both, learn and work the business to make a living and write in your free time, then leave clean when you proved you can earn a living at it.

Best just to get on with your life for the time being. Lady Obaldistone has a lovely niece whom you'll probably like, and adventure involving a Scottish rebel may also be just around the corner.
