It's mu daughter's car. She's certain she bought the right fuel and has checked the fuel cap but no luck. It was from Tesco, a couple of weeks before Christmas. She rang them up but didn't have a receipt so they said hard luck.

Did you buy your petrol from Tesco? and how long ago?
are you sure you have put petrol in not diesel ? i know these are stupid questions, and i am sure you have been asked them a few times before.
The only thing i can suggest really is to take it a garage for them to take a reading of the fault code, then they can tell you from there what the problem is, but at the moment i would not drive the car unless really needed to.

Pay no attention to all the thumbs down ratings! They are all correct! It is your fuel cap. The cars computer monitors pressure in the tank, if it detects a leak it will turn that light on. The purpose is to prevent vapors escaping into the atmosphere.

1 of 3 things - in order of probable cause

1. gas cap - screw on tight
2. clogged fuel injectors - pour "fuel injector cleaner" into your full tank
3. old fuel filter - do a full tune up which includes a fuel filter replacement.

make sure your gas cap is on securely. Also, make sure you are using the octane level prescribed in your owners manual.
