Patricia Cornwell is my favorite author I have read her entire Dr. Scarpetta series....
If you want funny books though these I highly recommend True Lies of a Drama Queen-Lee Nichols, How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls-Zoey Dean, and if you have ever seen Running with scissors and liked it then all of Augusten Burroughs books are good (like hilarious)

"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and read a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

You might enjoy the medical thrillers written by Robin Cook.
Stephen King has a lot of good ones if you're into horror & sci-fi.
Patricia Cornwell is a great mystery writer as well.

um i really recommend the Twilight series, it is about this small town girl who moves to another small town and meets this vampire, and she falls in love with him, it is so good, they have stufv that they have to give up to be together but its all worth it, the first one is Twilight, the second one is New Moon and the third one is Eclipse, the fourth is called Breaking Dawn but it is coming out fall of next year so you may have to wait if you read then and you get done, but they are making a movie about Twilight, it should come out like in 2010 which sucks for all of its fans, but anyways, there is a website and i will give u the link
http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/index.html
here you can find out anything about the series pretty much and find out about the movie too but i hope this helped! bye

Harry Potter, definitely.
You can also try the Uglies trilogy or the Twilight series.
Good luck!
Edit: My teacher told us about this book called "The Secret Life of Bees". She said it's supposed to be really good. =]
