All of the other suggestions are good, but let me tell you...reading about them is not going to be enough for you to be successful. You need to find someone that raises cattle and offer to help them in exchange for their advice. The cattle business is hard, 24/7/365 work and is really expensive. When my husband and I bought our own cattle (I was raised on a ranch and he had worked for several ranches over the years) it was 4 years before we made a small profit. You have to be committed to being there every single day to look after your animals' needs no matter whether it's cold or hot, you're sick or well, etc., etc.,etc. I'm not trying to talk you out of doing it, but you really need more than a book to be able to make a success of it. Good luck to you.

35-50 is definetly not just a hobby size herd. The Dept. of agriculture extension service is probably the best source. I suggest you actually go see them rather than just use the web. They will be able to provide specific info for your area.
Even details like what breeds are most popular/ profitable for your area.
