Hmmm...
*Rabbits are small but VERY high maintenance and need a lot of space and live for up to 15 years
*Guinea pigs are the same, but live for around 3 or so years
*Hamsters don't take up much space, neither do rats or mice
*Ferrets and chinchillas need a lot of room and care; they're classed as "exotic" so vet bills will be high
*Fish - as you've already said. You probably washed the tank out with something toxic which then killed the fish on their return to the tank

I commend your desire to have a pet, but I feel you are not ready yet to really commit yourself to taking care of one (or several). All pets need love and care, and that includes regular cleaning and maintenance of their needs and environment. If you can't see beyond just the cleaning and maintenance of a pet, I seriously suggest just getting a small terrarium with plants that don't require a lot of maintenance (like cactuses). Please develop good stewardship if you intend to take care of living things, and that includes being responsible and making sure you absolutely understand how to take care of them properly. Everyone makes mistakes (like what happened to your fish) but what's important is you learn from that and make sure it doesn't happen again. Good luck :)

Maybe you could get a couple hermit crabs. I have two small ones in a 10 gallon tank and it works for them all they really need is fresh water and food everyday and to clean the sand (have a scooper you can buy) and you just do that like twice a month and mine stays pretty clean.

The only two things that fit your requirements are small snakes (no pythons or boas, they're high maintenance) or stuffed toys. Possibly spiders, but they don't live as long.

If you don't want to take up space or do any work to take care of it, don't get a pet. All pets need space, time, and care.
