That would be like I choose one Mexican in Mexico (Mexico's population is about 100 million) at random and you have to go find which one I chose. Good luck with that.

people win the powerball lottery all the time and the odds of winning are greater than 100 million to 1. As far as the comparison of a needle in a haystack is concerned, it will depend on ths size of the needle and how big the haystack. Now if you are the guy that sits on the haystack and gets the needle jammed into his butt then it wasn't impossible, was it?

Depends on the scenario. In a courtroom the prosecution might say that there is only one chance in 100 million of the defendant not matching the evidence, but it would be down to the defence to point out that (in the US) this still means 2 or 3 other people could match the profile.

100 million to one means that you if you do 100 million different experiments, you will get only 1 outcome of success (that means one outcome of the result you are looking for).

If the odds of finding a person with a rare genetic disorder is 100 million to 1, there are three such people in the United States, or 60 in the entire world (fewer people than that win the Nobel Prize each year, so Nobel Prize winners are pretty special)

However, if the odds of finding life around a star are as LOW as 100 million to one, then the galaxy (composed of a few hundred BILLION stars) is teeming with life.
So, improbability depends on your expectation, the odds, and the sample size.

Note: Ah, but Richard P, was that a random search :)

Well... i would say the odds of finding a needle in a haysack are greater than that... depending on the size of the hay stack. I would say that 100 Million to 1 odds are so small of odds that it is near impossible, except when you are talking about some kind of disease. There are several diseases in which about 1 in 100 million babies may get the disease.
