Hi handsome!

I don't use mine so much for cooking as I do to keep it warm when I take it other places outside the home. For the actual cooking, I much prefer just using the oven, range top, pressure cooker, or whatever. But a crock pot just can't be beat for keeping a pot of chili or stew hot when you take it to a pot-luck gathering or to food day at work to feed all your friends.

You can cook any recipe in a slow cooker that you would simmer on top of the stove. The 2 things you have to watch are the liquid and the spices you use. Liquid doesn't boil away in the slow cooker so cut 1/4 of the liquid called for in the recipe and only use 3/4.of it. Unless you are going to use the liquid as gravy Spices are intensified in a slow cooker so use a light hand. Try doing a roast in it. Put a layer of onions cut in rings and carrot circles in the bottom Then add the roast seasoned with salt and pepper and some beef broth. Cook on low for 8 hours

Not very often. However, an autumn tradition at my house is the crock-pot conversion of about a bushel and a half of Northern Spies into around fifty pints of apple butter. It takes most of the week, as I can only do about nine pints at a time - but let me tell you, the house smells so good all that week - and my family and I have lots of scrumptious apple butter to spread on our toast in the morning, our biscuits mid-morning, and to spread on a pork roast as it goes into the oven. I'll spread a cup of said apple butter atop a 2 1/2 pound pork roast and pop 'er in a 325 degree oven for an hour and a half. When done I'll slice that and serve it with the apple butter. Better pork you'll never taste!
So yeah - a crock pot/slow cooker has it's uses. Heck, one can even do the pork roast in the crock pot. I also do homemade Texas chili in it - chili being about the only good thing ever to come outa Texas!

I have one, and I've used it several times. The only thing I really like it for is beef stew.

I got a slow cooker cook book, but it seems hooked on hot spices, which I cannot eat. Also, many of the recipes say to put some ingredients in at one time, the rest later. I thought the whole idea of a slow cooker was set it up and forget about it until dinner time.

I rarely cook myself. I am by no means a domesticated diva!!! But....there is so much you can do in a crock pot that is fix ahead and ready to eat at dinner!!! I make a lovely pot roast that simmers all day until the meat just is so tender it melts. I've really gotten into chili and things like that and they are extra special when they can cook all day and just simmer. I also make my own soups in them.
I love them. Not only are they convenient, but also easy to clean up and the leftovers make great freezer treats for a later time.
If you are buying one, make sure you only buy the one that the actual crockery comes out for serving or storage.
They also make super gifts!!!

Yes, they make the best pot roasts, stews, beans, chicken soup, etc. Just turn it on and leave it for the day. It's great.
