I have a 1996 plymouth voyager van 3.0 runs for 20 min than shuts off. Will restart in about 20min and do again no error code no check engine light. Changed fuel pump and filter recently. New battery. Has to be a sensor or something. Dont want to take to another garage if its something simple.

My best guess would be either the coil is bad, or the replacement fuel pump is bad. If the problem started after replacing the pump, it is possible that you got a bad pump, but if you replaced the pump for this problem, then it is not very likely to be the problem.

It won't be the alternator if it runs for 20 minutes, dies, then starts and runs for an other 20 minutes later. If it was, it certainly wouldn't restart without a jump start or charging the battery.

It shouldn't have a vapor lock problem, that doesn't happen on modern vehicles since the pump is in the tank and pushes the fuel. The pressure is too high for the line to get hot enough to vaporize the fuel. I've never seen nor heard of a vehicle with a tank-mounted pump vapor locking.

Disconnecting the battery on a running vehicle is NOT the BEST way to check the alternator for proper operation. It is a way to do so for free and at your own house, but you risk frying the computer from a voltage spike if the cables spark.

The BEST way to check it is to have the entire charging system checked for proper operation, which many auto parts stores will do for free.

Mark B is right. I had a 6 month old fuel pump go bad, so you might first turn the ignition on (without starting) and you should hear a buzzing sound from the fuel tank area for a few seconds. If you do, then I'd suspect the coil. I also agree, NEVER disconnect a battery cable on a running alternator equiped engine. You fry all sorts of expensive components.

did you check the alternator??? when you key on there should be an icon of a battery on the dash along with the other engine and diag lights. It the battery light is absent durring key on then you have some loose connection with a charging wire to the alternator itself.

The best way to check to see if your alternator is working is to turn the car on then disconnect the battery ... if the car stays running then the alternator is good and strong. If the car shuts off then the alternator should be replaced. Even the newest and strongest batteries can not power a car by itself.

..1..anti theft system gone crazy..2..coil over heating and only works after cooling.3..engine overheating causing vapor lock...look in ur shop manual under trouble shooting
